Understanding Silver Valuation

What Is a Scrap Silver Calculator?

A scrap silver calculator determines the intrinsic melt value of a silver item — not its retail price or sentimental value. It answers: if you melted this item down to pure silver today, what would that metal be worth? Our engine utilizes real-time feeds from the COMEX and LBMA exchanges to provide the same valuation used by professional refineries globally.

Melt Value = (Weight × Purity) ÷ 31.1035 × Spot Price

Every calculation is performed with 4-point decimal precision — the same methodology used by major precious metals refineries and commodity trading desks worldwide.

Hallmark Identification

Look for "925" or "Sterling" for high-grade jewelry. Fine silver carries "999". European pieces show "800" or "835" stamps. Items marked "EPNS" or "Silver Plate" contain only a microscopic layer of silver — these have negligible scrap value. Use the Silver Identifier tool if you're unsure.

Market Intelligence

The gold-to-silver ratio shown in our dashboard is a key market indicator. When it exceeds 80, silver is historically undervalued relative to gold. When it drops below 60, silver may be relatively expensive. Use our Sell or Hold tool to model different price scenarios before making a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about silver scrap value.

Multiply the item's weight in troy ounces by its purity (as a decimal) and by the current silver spot price. For example, 10g of 925 sterling at $30/oz ≈ $8.95. This calculator does it instantly.
Spot price is the market price for one troy ounce of pure 999 silver. Melt value is what your specific item is worth based on its weight and purity — always ≤ spot.
Look for stamps: 925, 900, 800, 999, or "STERLING". If no marking, a jeweler can do an acid test or XRF analysis. EPNS or "Silver Plate" = plated, negligible scrap value.
Most buyers pay 70–95% of melt value. Pawn shops offer less; online silver refiners offer 85–95%. Always get multiple offers and verify fairness with this calculator.
Not exactly. Junk silver = pre-1965 US coins (90% silver, no collector premium). Scrap silver = broader term for broken jewelry, flatware, dental silver sold for its metal.
Very little. Plated items have only a thin coating (microns) over base metal. Only solid sterling or fine silver has meaningful value.
