Silver Knife Value

Important: Most "silver" knives have solid sterling handles with stainless steel blades. Only the handle is silver.

Typical Handle Weights

  • Butter knife (all silver): 25-40 grams
  • Dinner knife (handle only): 30-50 grams silver
  • Hollow handle discount: Deduct 50-60% of total weight for hollow handles

Weigh the entire knife, then estimate the silver handle weight. Hollow handles contain cement/pitch filler, so actual silver content is less than the handle weight.

Silver Knives: What's Actually Silver?

Silver knives require special attention when calculating scrap value because most have hollow or stainless steel handles and only the blade — or in many cases, just the ferrule and bolster — is silver or silver-plated. Even in high-quality sterling flatware sets, the knife blade is typically stainless steel (for durability and food safety), with only the handle being solid silver or silver-plated over a base metal.

Before selling silver knives for scrap, verify which parts are actually silver. A hallmarked silver handle (925, 800) contributes meaningfully to melt value; a stainless blade contributes zero. When in doubt, a refiner will weigh and acid-test each component separately.

Understanding Knife Construction

  • Solid silver handles: Uncommon; found in high-end antique sets. These contribute full melt value.
  • Hollow silver handles: Common in Victorian flatware — the handle is silver sheet filled with pitch or resin. Weigh minus fill weight.
  • Silver-plated handles: The most common type. Marked "EPNS", "A1", "EP", or by plating thickness (e.g., "10/0"). Minimal silver value.

Frequently Asked Questions: Silver Knives

Why are silver knives worth less per piece than forks or spoons? Because the blade is almost always stainless steel, not silver. Only the handle contributes to silver scrap value. A typical sterling silver knife handle weighs 15–25 grams of actual silver, while a matching fork of comparable size weighs 40–60 grams total in silver.

Can I scrap just the handles? Dealers will calculate value based on verified silver content regardless of whether handles are separated. Some buyers prefer handles intact; others prefer them loose so the handle fill can be assessed. Check with your specific buyer.

What if the handle is hollow and filled? Many sterling knife handles are hollow and filled with pitch or cement for weight and balance. A buyer will estimate the fill weight and deduct it, or request that the handle be drained/weighed empty to calculate the true silver shell weight.
