Silver Plate Value

Important distinction: A "silver plate" (solid silver serving plate) is very different from "silver-plated" items coated with thin silver.

How to Tell the Difference

  • Solid silver: Stamped "925", "STERLING", or "800" — valuable
  • Silver-plated: Stamped "EP", "EPNS", "Silver Plate" — minimal silver value

Typical Solid Silver Plate Weights

  • Bread plate: 100-200 grams
  • Dinner plate: 200-400 grams
  • Charger plate: 300-500 grams

Silver Plates and Trays: Flatware vs. Decorative Pieces

The term "silver plate" has two distinct meanings that significantly affect value. A solid silver plate (a flat serving plate made of sterling or coin silver) is valued at full melt based on its weight and purity. A silver-plated item is a base-metal object (copper, brass, or nickel silver) with a thin electroplated silver coating — these have minimal scrap value.

Solid serving plates stamped 925, STERLING, 800, or 900 COIN are solid silver. Their weight can be substantial — a large dinner plate may weigh 300–500 grams, representing significant silver content. Always check the underside for hallmarks before assuming an item is plated.

How to Tell Solid from Plated

  • Hallmarks: Solid silver will show purity marks (925, 800, 999, STERLING, COIN). Plated items show "EPNS", "EP", "A1", "Silverplate", or no silver mark at all.
  • Worn spots: On plated pieces, wear patterns reveal the yellow/orange base metal beneath. Solid silver wears to more silver.
  • Weight: Solid silver plates feel noticeably heavier than plated equivalents of the same size.

Frequently Asked Questions: Silver Plates

I have a set marked "Silver Plate" — is it worth anything? As silver scrap, very little. A silver-plated dinner plate might contain 2–5 grams of actual silver, worth less than $0.50 at current prices. However, electroplated silverware from notable manufacturers (Gorham, Reed & Barton, Tiffany) can have collectible value to buyers of decorative antiques.

How do I find the weight of just the silver in a plated piece? You can't practically extract it at home. Refiners who process silver-plated material typically quote a flat rate per pound of plated items — currently $0.30–$0.80 per pound depending on silver thickness grades.

I have a heavy plate stamped "800" — is that different? Yes — significantly. A plate stamped "800" is solid 80% silver, not plated. This is a completely different category with substantial melt value. Use the weight and the 0.80 purity factor to calculate its value with this calculator.
